COAS, IGP Commit To Enhanced Inter-Agency Cooperation
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has emphasized that a unified and coordinated strategy among security agencies is essential to overcoming Nigeria’s current security challenges.
General Shaibu made the remarks on Wednesday at the Army Headquarters in Abuja during a maiden visit by the 23rd Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
Strengthening Internal Security
The IGP, in his address, called for deepened synergy between the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force to more effectively address internal threats. Commending the existing strategic partnership, IGP Disu noted that high-level cooperation is vital for achieving national security goals.
He specifically expressed appreciation for the Army’s role in capacity building, highlighting the training of Police Mobile Force personnel as a key factor in improving operational effectiveness across various regions. The IGP further committed to enhanced intelligence sharing and closer operational coordination with the military.
A History of Collaboration
Responding to the IGP, General Shaibu congratulated the police chief on his appointment, noting that their professional relationship began years ago while serving together in the United Nations Mission in Darfur.
The COAS acknowledged the critical support provided by the Nigeria Police Force to troops currently deployed in Kogi, Kwara, and Niger States. These joint efforts against banditry and kidnapping are reportedly yielding positive outcomes.
The Path Forward
Reaffirming his commitment to “jointness” as a core pillar of his command philosophy, the COAS assured the IGP of the Army’s continued support. He reiterated that a well-coordinated inter-agency framework remains the only viable path to achieving lasting peace and security across the federation.
