FG Hosts ‘Family and Community Day’ To Honour Military Kin, Fallen Heroes
As part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) celebrations, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Defence, hosted a “Humanitarian Family and Community Day” at the Mogadishu Cantonment in Abuja.
The event, specifically organized for the families of serving, retired, and fallen officers across the three services of the Nigerian Military, aimed to provide a platform for solidarity, healing, and national appreciation.
The Special Guest of Honour and wife of the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mrs. Oghogho Lilian Christopher Musa, stated that the initiative was intentionally designed to uplift the children and spouses of those who paid the ultimate price for the nation’s defense.
”Behind every gallant officer is a family whose strength, patience, and sacrifice contribute significantly to national security,” Mrs. Musa remarked. She further emphasized that supporting military families is both a moral and national obligation, as they provide the essential emotional support for those currently at the battlefront.
Echoing these sentiments, the wife of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mrs. Hassana Pheelangwah, noted that the day’s theme, “Celebrating the Strength Behind Our Soldiers,” highlights the often-unseen sacrifices made at home.
”While the courage of our Armed Forces is visible on the battlefield, the real backbone of that courage is often hidden in the patience of spouses and the determination of children,” Mrs. Pheelangwah said during her welcome address.
The event departed from traditional military formalities, featuring a variety of recreational activities intended to foster unity and morale. Highlights included:
- A “Family Honour” parade.
- Competitive games such as Tug of War and Egg races.
- Entertainment for children, including bouncing castles and mini-games.
- Dancing competitions for families.
The Family and Community Day has become a staple of the annual AFRD calendar, serving to strengthen the bond between the Nigerian military and the wider community while ensuring that the families of veterans and fallen heroes remain recognized by the state.
