FG Rebrands January 15 To ‘Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day’
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially renamed the annual military appreciation day observed on January 15 to Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
The change, which moves away from the previous title of “Armed Forces Remembrance Day,” is designed to reflect a dual mission: honoring current service members while continuing to pay tribute to those who died in the line of duty.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, Major General Samaila Uba and made available to Channel Network Afrique, CNA, it was noted that the date remains set aside to celebrate living personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and acknowledge the sacrifices made to safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity.
”The name was officially changed to better reflect the dual essence of the occasion in honoring the living while also acknowledging the fallen heroes,” the statement read.
The annual observance follows a week of commemorative activities, which reach a climax on January 15 with a national grand parade and a formal wreath-laying ceremony.
Major General Uba further called on the media and the public to adopt the updated nomenclature in all future coverage and communications.
The Defence Headquarters also expressed its appreciation for the media’s continued support in the ongoing efforts to combat insecurity across the country.
