INEC Chairman Denies Endorsing Partisan X Post, Warns of Fake Accounts.
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has denied reports alleging he endorsed a partisan post on X (formerly Twitter), describing the claim as false and fabricated.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Adedayo Oketola, the allegation was dismissed as “baseless” and a “figment of the imagination” of those behind it.
Oketola clarified that the INEC Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political activity in either his private or official capacity.
He said the purported post was a deliberate attempt to undermine the Chairman’s integrity at a critical time when the Commission is focused on electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming polls.
The statement further revealed that cybercriminals have been using fake social media accounts bearing the Chairman’s name to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians. Several such accounts, it noted, have previously been identified and reported to security agencies.
Describing the latest incident as part of an ongoing pattern of criminal activity, the Commission said it is working with security and cyber intelligence agencies to track down those responsible.
INEC warned that individuals behind the impersonation and spread of false information would face prosecution under the Cybercrimes Act, stressing that identity theft and dissemination of forged social media content are criminal offences.
The Commission urged the public to disregard the false report and rely only on verified institutional channels and official statements for information.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering free, fair, and credible elections, stating that it remains undeterred by attempts to discredit its leadership.
