2027: INEC Extends Deadline For Submission Of Party Membership Registers

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has adjusted the timeline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members under the revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election.

In a statement issued in Abuja by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission announced that the deadline, earlier fixed for April 1, 2026, has been shifted to April 21, 2026.

Haruna explained that concerns over the timeline were raised during a meeting between the Commission and political parties held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

He noted that INEC subsequently agreed to adjust the submission period to align with the 21 days prescribed by Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, taking into account the actual dates set by political parties for their primaries.

The Commission urged political parties to schedule their primaries within the approved window of April 23 to May 30, 2026, stressing the importance of strict adherence to the timeline to ensure a smooth electoral process.

According to the statement, party membership registers must be submitted to INEC not later than 21 days before the conduct of primaries. Consequently, the final deadline for submission has effectively been extended to May 10, 2026, instead of the earlier April 21 date contained in the revised timetable.
