Nigeria, Mexico Target Deeper Ties with Ministerial Exchange
Nigeria and Mexico have announced plans to initiate a series of ministerial exchange visits aimed at deepening the 50-year diplomatic relationship between the two regional powers.
The initiative was highlighted during a valedictory visit by the outgoing Mexican Ambassador to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, following the conclusion of his four-year tour of duty.
Strengthening Tourism and Trade
During the meeting, Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed a keen interest in leveraging Mexico’s expertise to grow Nigeria’s burgeoning tourism and cultural sectors.
”We have a lot to learn from Mexico in the area of tourism,” the Minister stated. “I have been in discussions with the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy to see how we can expand our relations culturally. Our nations share similar family-oriented values and much in common.”
The Minister praised Ambassador Ortiz for his strategic role in enhancing economic cooperation, noting that his tenure saw the establishment of the Nigerian-Mexican Chamber of Commerce and the inauguration of a Mexican Honorary Consulate in Lagos.
Economic Milestones
Ambassador Ortiz credited the Nigerian government for its support, noting that bilateral relations have advanced through structured dialogue. Key achievements during his tenure include:
- Agricultural Cooperation: The SENASICA–NAQS framework significantly boosted Nigeria’s hibiscus exports to Mexico.
- Regional Leadership: Ortiz described Nigeria as a “strong voice in global affairs” and a pivotal power within ECOWAS.
- Economic Growth: The envoy commended the economic trajectory under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” administration.
Future Collaborations
As both nations look toward the next chapter of their diplomatic partnership, officials emphasized a commitment to expanding collaboration into several emerging sectors, including:
- Manufacturing and Mining
- Infrastructure and Pharmaceuticals
- The Digital Economy
The outgoing envoy, accompanied by his spouse, Maria, pledged to remain a supporter of Nigeria–Mexico relations even after his retirement from diplomatic service.
