Nigeria, Mexico Target New Trade Frontiers as Envoy Departs
The Federal Government of Nigeria has lauded the outgoing Mexican Ambassador, H.E. Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, for his role in elevating diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations during his four-year tenure.
The commendation was delivered Tuesday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters by the Permanent Secretary, Amb. Dunoma Umar Ahmed, who received the envoy on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.
Growing Economic Cooperation
During the farewell audience, officials highlighted a surge in bilateral trade, particularly within the agricultural sector. Ambassador Ortiz noted that his tenure saw the institutionalization of structured dialogue and the establishment of the Nigeria–Mexico Chamber of Commerce.
A key success cited was the SENASICA–NAQS framework, a technical collaboration that has streamlined the export of Nigerian hibiscus to Mexican markets. To further support these commercial ties, an Honorary Consul was recently appointed in Lagos.
”Nigeria–Mexico relations have witnessed significant advancement,” Ortiz said, expressing gratitude for the cooperation of the Nigerian government since his arrival in 2022.
A Golden Jubilee Milestone
The transition comes at a historic juncture, as 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Mexico, established in 1976.
Amb. Ahmed described the milestone as a testament to the resilience of the partnership. While celebrating existing agricultural successes, the Permanent Secretary urged Mexican investors to expand into Nigeria’s emerging sectors, including:
- Solid Minerals: Tapping into Nigeria’s vast mining potential.
- The Creative Economy: Leveraging Nigeria’s global influence in film and music.
- Infrastructure & Pharmaceuticals: Addressing critical development needs through joint ventures.
Commitment to Continuity
Responding to the Ministry’s remarks, Ambassador Ortiz, who is retiring from diplomatic service, pledged to remain an advocate for Nigerian interests. “I will continue to support the advancement of bilateral ties in any capacity possible,” he assured.
The Ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining an enabling environment for foreign direct investment, stressing that the momentum of the last four years must be sustained through high-level engagements and the strict implementation of existing bilateral agreements.
