NYSC Debunks ‘Death Trap’ Report, Denies Ransom Clause And Reaffirms Corps Members’ Safety Measures
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has dismissed a circulating report titled “Urgent: The NYSC Death Trap Our Graduates Are Being Sold to Bandits,” describing it as false, misleading, and capable of inciting public fear.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Scheme expressed concern that at a time when national security demands responsible communication, the publication was disseminated without due diligence. It said the report contained distortions and unverified claims that misrepresent its operations and undermine public confidence in the institution.
NYSC specifically refuted claims of a “ransom clause,” stating that no such provision exists in its Act, bye-laws, or any official publication, and urged the public to disregard the allegation entirely.
The Scheme also addressed the reported case of Musa Usman Abba, expressing sympathy for him and his family. However, it clarified that Abba is not a serving corps member, having completed his national service in 2023, and said linking his situation to NYSC is inaccurate.
Reaffirming its commitment to corps members’ welfare, NYSC highlighted its long standing partnership with Capital Express Assurance Limited, which provides life insurance coverage for corps members from the point of call up through service and up to three weeks after completion. It added that corps members are also enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme.
According to the Scheme, over ₦500 million has been spent on urgent medical interventions for corps members nationwide in the past five years.
On security, NYSC said it works closely with relevant agencies to ensure the safety of corps members, including providing escorts in high risk areas. It noted that such measures have been intensified since 2024 in parts of the North West and earlier in some North East states.
The Scheme also said it has relocated orientation camps in states including Kebbi, Kaduna, Kwara, Borno, Gombe, and Plateau to safer locations as part of its risk management efforts.
NYSC criticised the author of the report for failing to seek its input before publication, stressing the importance of balanced reporting and adherence to the principle of fair hearing.
It urged media practitioners and the public to verify information from credible sources before dissemination, warning that fake news erodes trust and undermines national institutions.
The Scheme reaffirmed its commitment to corps members’ safety, youth development, and national unity.
