Two Killed, Three Injured In Six-Vehicle Crash Involving Tanker, Tricycles In Ibadan
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m. along the Challenge Gate axis at Bere in Ibadan.
The crash, which happened under the jurisdiction of the Oluyole Unit Command, involved six vehicles, including a DAF tanker belonging to BOVAS Group and five tricycles.
According to a statement by the Acting Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu, 11 persons were involved in the incident. Three sustained varying degrees of injuries, while two victims an adult male and an adult female lost their lives.
FRSC operatives responded promptly, evacuating the injured to nearby medical facilities, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Adeoyo Hospital morgue.
The agency said the wreckage was cleared to restore traffic flow. The tricycles were towed to Mapo Police Station, while the tanker was recovered by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).
Preliminary investigations attribute the crash to dangerous driving linked to excessive speeding. The tanker driver reportedly lost control while in motion, leading to a multiple collision with the tricycles.
Reacting to the incident, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed concern over the persistent rate of speed related crashes, describing speeding as a leading cause of fatal accidents in Nigeria.
He warned that excessive speed reduces drivers’ reaction time and increases the severity of crashes, often turning survivable incidents into fatal ones. He stressed that “no journey is worth the loss of human lives,” urging motorists to prioritise safety over speed.
Mohammed also cautioned commercial and heavy duty vehicle drivers, particularly tanker operators, to maintain safe speeds and full control of their vehicles, especially in high traffic areas.
He further called on fleet operators to strengthen driver training and enforce compliance with speed limits, while advising tricycle operators and other road users to remain vigilant and avoid risky manoeuvres.
